On Monday, what was long hoped for became reality. Ajax and Viktor Fischer extended their agreement for an additional three football years. His old contract ran until June 30, 2014, and the new one goes until mid-2017. “With this, we, and Viktor, are sending out a good sign”, Ajax’s director of football affairs, Marc Overmars, says about the contract extension. On Monday at de Toekomst, a glass was raised to toast a great, and successful, football future. The 18 year old Ajax player himself was the glowing centre of attention in the sports complex’s boardroom. Flanked by Ajax directors Overmars and Michael Kinsbergen (general manager), the Dane’s new contract was signed by many. The forward has been playing with Ajax’s youth academy since 2011. Fischer made his official debut in Ajax 1on August 5, 2012, in the Johan Cruijff Plate match against PSV. “By doing this, a talent like Viktor indicates that he wants to achieve something with Ajax in the next few years”, continues Overmars, who was visibly pleased by the talented player’s contract extension. Ajax is also sending out a clear signal. “Viktor is getting a shot here. And he’s definitely grabbed all of the opportunities that he’s received until now. He’s still just eighteen. This contract extension is also important towards others. If you have qualities, you’ll get a shot with Ajax.” If everything continues to go well in athletically, Ajax fans will be able to enjoy Fischer’s masterpieces for the next few years. The Dane’s commitment to Ajax can also be seen as a win for the relatively new management. “You need to see this as a compliment for the club as a whole, as we stand now”, continues Overmars. “There are a lot of positive feelings in the club right now. And this is a healthy agreement; Viktor can continue to develop here.” Once the ink has dried on all of the signatures, hands have been shaken and congratulations have been extended, Fischer shows his happiness at the updated agreement. “Right now, it’s most important to stay with Ajax”, explains the forward. Fischer came over from FC Midtjylland in 2011 and rapidly grew into a Danish international. Fisher is one of the biggest Danish talents of the moment. “I’ve never doubted that this is the best place for me. Where that’s concerned, Ajax and I had agreed quickly. When this contract ends, I’ll hopefully be ready for a next step. For now, I’m looking at it from game to game. For this season, I want to win the championship and the cup. Winning prizes – that’s what it’s about.”
